WILLIAM TELL
As a historical epic, William Tell reinterprets the traditional folk tale by incorporating contemporary elements. Set during the period of Austrian dominance over Switzerland, the film narrates a tale of defiance as the Swiss populace rises against their tyrannical rulers. William Tell, portrayed by Claes Bang, is depicted as a man who has found tranquillity with his wife and son after experiencing the traumas of the Crusades.
Tell enjoys a life of simplicity, subsisting as a hunter and striving to guide his son away from the errors of his past. Although life under Austrian governance is challenging, the community manages to cope—until the assassination of a tax collector ignites tensions. This event compels Tell to re-enter the fray, as he is urged by various factions to reclaim his bow and retaliate against the oppressors of Switzerland.
What starts as a minor conflict rapidly transforms into a fight for the survival of the Swiss people when Austrian Viceroy Gessler, played by Connor Swindells, takes it upon himself to enforce submission through extreme brutality. His objective is to ensure that all inhabitants of the land endure suffering if they fail to adhere to his and the king’s demands.
